During the late 1930s, the Union Pacific often used helpers to move trains from Ogden to Wasatch. The UP wanted to simplify this move so they asked their "Department of Research and Mechanical Standards" to design a locomotive that could pull a 3600 ton train unassisted over the 1.14% grade of the Wasatch.

The designers determined that to pull a 3600 ton train, a tractive effort of 135,000 lbs would be needed. Assuming a factor of adhesion of 4.0, the weight on drivers would have to be 4.0 * 135,000 = 540,000 lbs. Given an axle loading of 67,500 lbs each, this would require 8 drivers or an x-8-8-x wheel arrangement. The designers agreed upon the 4-8-8-4 design. Next, the horsepower and cylinder sizes were computed based on 300 psi boiler pressure. Although they weren't planning to pull these freight trains at 80 MPH, the DoRMS designed them for 80 MPH in order to have a sufficient factor of safety built into the design. What resulted is considered by many to be the most successful articulated steam locomotive ever built. 4000 was delivered to Omaha at 6PM, September 5, 1941.

Za razliku od raznih prototipova, serija 4000 je uspjesno vozila od 1941 pa do sluzbenog povlacenja 1962 i sve su lokomotive skupile preko 1.000.000.000 milja.

Prije nego što sam vidio link, si me zbunio :?

U biti, ne radi se o klasičnoj parnoj lokomotivi, sa parnim strojem, nego sa parnom turbinom, koja služi za pokretanje generatora koji daje struju vučnim motorima :D A pokreće ju parna turbina, ne "struja" :wink:

E šta sve neće napraviti... :P

Još jedna, "samo" 47 m

Para pokreće turbinu koja vrti generator. Ispred kabine je prostor za ugljen, a u tenderu voda.

This loco is another steam-turbine/electric; one of only three built. They had conventional coal-fired fire-tube boilers mounted backwards behind the cab and stretching back towards the tender. Steam was generated at the high pressure of 310 psi and fed to the turbine-generator. Power output was 6000hp, transmitted through eight traction motors. There were five bogies in a 2-C1-2-C1-B arrangement. Only the first three axles on the eight-wheel bogies were powered. The trailing bogie was powered, (hence that B) but the leading bogie and the one in the middle were not; the middle four-wheel bogie simply supported the large firebox. Coal was stored in a large hopper at the front of the loco, covered by a very ugly "streamlined" cowl. Water was carried in the trailing tender.

Big Boy Class 4000 je najveća ikad sagrađena parnjača na svijetu.

Proizvođač: American Locomotive Company (ALCo), Schenectady (NY).

 

Proizvođene su za Union Pacific u dvije serije: prva 1940.-1942. i druga 1943.-1944. U prvoj seriji izgrađeno je 20 a u drugoj 35 komada. Izvedba 2DD2. Bile su namijenjene za vuču prvenstveno na Sherman-Hill ruti, a najteže terete vukle su i dvije spregnute lokomotive. Iz prometa su povučene 1961. u staro željezo a 8 kotlova i danas postoji u raznim muzejima.

 

Zbog njihove veličine na više mjesta morao se mijenjati profil pruge a u Cheyenneu, Ogdenu i Green Riveru i okretnice kako bi ovi divovi na njih stali.

 

Duljina preko odbojnika, uključivo tender, bila je 40.353 mm, visina 4,9 m a masa s tenderom koje 544 t. Najveća brzina 128 km/h. Zahvaljujući Stoker automatici trošila je 10-12 t ugljena na sat.

Koliko sam vidio po nacrtima nekih US parnjača, postoji spiralni punjač (slično kao kod mašine za mljevenje mesa) koji grabi ugljen iz tendera i puni lokomotivu.

Sad ću i ja pored vas nešto naučiti. :hm

 

Dakle, stoker nije izumitelj nego engleska riječ za ložača.

 

Riječ je o uređaju za loženje tj. dovođenje ugljena u kotao uređajem za ubacivanje promjenjivo određene zbijene količine ugljena u ograničeni prolaz formirajući ugljenu traku koja sagorijeva između bočnih tračnica kose (nagnute) rešetke smještene povrh prostora u koji se tlači zrak. Propadom kroz rešetku ugljena traka sagorijeva bez formiranja klinkera i pepela.

 

Ja nisam strojar pa me ne pitajte za daljnje detalje. Istini za volju, ne znam baš ni detalje loženja običnih lokomotiva (osim da se ugljen ručno lopatom ubacuje u kotao) :)
